Deliverables

Know-how transfer from Europe to Pan-Amazonia

The course and workshop will treat the following questions:

What are the global mainstreams in biotechnology today?

Where are the best opportunities for LAM enterprises to enter the biotech market in the Merco Sul?

On what topics (and why) international investments in biotechnology are focused?

What are the research methods international biotech-labs are using?

What should be done (strategy) to approach LAM universities to global standards in biotechnology research?

What kind of research networks could be established between LAM and EU institutions in this fields.

How can existing research networks be integrated to the MICRODIV Project?

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) guidelines

The IPR's discussed during the workshop are focused on the actual situation in Brazil and Venezuela. There are two experts from each of these countries invited to discuss this specific topic. The final output of the discussion should be able to provide the bases for a fair model of intellectual property rights capable to guarantee on one hand the protection for the Amazonian genetic resources and on the other hand take the knowledge transfer into account.

Emission of certificates

The attendees of the course in "Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology" will get certificates from the Instituto de Biologia Experimental, and CENAMB, at the Universidad Central de Venezuela.

Publication of the workshop reader: "Microbial Techno-diversity in Amazonia"

This WORKSHOP Reader will contain articles composed by the speakers of the opening session, theoretical background, methods, practical examples and experiences as obtained and performed during the practical course. This reader shall be published in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Actually we must ask if a consistent legislation for biotechnology exists. The question of legislation capable to protect the rich biodiversity of Amazonia has to be discussed in all Pan-Amazonian countries. That's why in the future organisations like UNAMAZ (on scientific level) and the own Pact of Amazonian Countries (on governmental level) will have to discuss this topic. Another main target of the whole event is to develop guidelines for biotechnological research. That is the reason why the open workshop is preceded by a training course for biologists which intend to or already work in biotech related activities.

Dissemination of Deliverables:

The Homepage of Amazonia Network -ANW will announce the event, will provide the attendees with background information, will compile a list of mandatory and useful links, and is intended to become a web-portal, to offer of a service as a worldwide communicator and disseminator of information, to capitalize Pan-Amazonian knowledge.

The know-how transferred during the WORKSHOP will be further transferred by the attendees to their home universities, throughout the Pan-Amazonian Countries The intense participation of Pan-Amazonian countries is guaranteed by the fact that the UCV occupies actually the presidency of the UNAMAZ (Union of Amazonian Universities), which counts of 54 universities from all Pan-Amazonian countries (Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana and Suriname). We recall that the UNAMAZ is a product of the Pact of Amazonian Countries, created in the 80ies. The UCV has also the intention to organize a similar event for all biotechnology-related institutions of the UNAMZ to define the strategic scientific policies for biotech research in Amazonian universities. It is planned that the workshop should serve as a model of discussion and training for the future UNAMAZ activities in this field.

The Publication "Microbial Techno-Diversity in Amazonia" will be a theoretical and practical guide for future activities in this thematic field.
